THE Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) Chairman, Mr A. Sakthivel, has called for an exporter-friendly import policy, which should enable the garment industries access raw materials and accessories easily.

Mr Sakthivel who inaugurated the three-day exhibition of accessories, materials, fashion trends (Acmatex 2004) for the knitwear in Tirupur on Wednesday felt that such a policy should enable export units importing accessories duty free and these imports could be allowed on the basis of the value of the exports of the unit done in the past three years. The idea is that at least 50 per cent of the value of these exports could be allowed for import of accessories.

Mr Sakthivel, who recently took over as the AEPC Chairman, said his work agenda would be to pursue with the Government for an export-friendly Exim and fiscal policies to help the domestic garment sector face up to the free global textile trade over the next 12 months.
