Ernakulam Govt hospital with a clean difference

Our Bureau

A view of the new-look General Hospital, Ernakulam.

Kochi , Jan. 4

UNLIKE any other Government-run general hospitals in the State, the Ernakulam General Hospital here has emerged as a model in providing quality health care to the poor in the district.

The new block of the hospital built with Central and State Government funds became fully functional in November last. Casualty, operation theatre complex, surgical wards, ICCU, SNBU, gynaec wards, cancer wards, MICU, ENT etc, are some of the major departments functioning from the double-storeyed 50,000 sq.ft. new block .

The total project cost was about Rs 6 crore, out of which Rs 5 crore was spent for civil, electrical, air-conditioning works and Rs 1 crore on purchase of various equipment and furniture, Mr Gyanesh Kumar, District Collector and Head of the Hospital Development Committee, told Business Line. He said that the most striking features for any visitor to the new hospital building are the general cleanliness and the display of signboards showing various departments and facilities.

Unlike in other government hospitals, cleaning of the new building has been entrusted to a private agency. The day-to-day electrical maintenance is also done by a private agency, he said.

A significant factor is that there is a difference in the attitude and behaviour of the doctors and staff here, which is appreciated by the patients and their relatives. According to Mr Kumar, this has been achieved by organising a special training programme in this regard by a voluntary agency a few months ago.

Besides, due to improvement in their working conditions and facilities the morale of the doctors and staff are also very high, he said. The initiatives taken by the hospital development committee, he said, has shown positive results in the functioning the general hospital and it is able to provide quality health care to poor people, which is comparable to the services provided by private hospitals.
