Alliances & Joint Ventures Agri-Biz & Commodities - Floriculture UK company signs MoU with Bengal firm for flower exports Our Bureau
Kolkata , Jan. 2 PERHAPS not too far from where George Bernard Shaw's Eliza Doolittle sold her flowers in Covent Garden, blooms and buds from this State might try to find a space in hearts of flower-loving Britons, very soon. A UK-based company on Friday signed an MoU with the West Bengal State Food Processing and Horticulture Development Corporation Ltd, for export of flowers worth Rs 1 crore every month on an average. The MoU which is for a year envisages exports of Rs 30 crore of flowers. Beginning with tapping markets in the UK, the company Amshib plans to export these flowers to Germany also. Among the flowers that are proposed to be exported are roses, tube-roses and gladioli. Based on the success of this venture, the company owned by NRI Mr S. Ganguly might also import fruits and vegetables from West Bengal. The State Government sources said that floriculture is a very important horticulture crop, which has a bright export prospect. In West Bengal, an estimated 13.5 hectares is under flower cultivation mostly in the districts of Howrah, Medinipur, Nadia and in north Bengal. In order to inject professionalism in the sector, the State Government has taken over a wholesale flower market in Howrah, with plans to convert it into a modern flower market. A committee runs this market, which is expected to increase employment opportunities (from the present 17.3 lakh), besides boosting export prospects. One of the profitable outfits run by the State Government, the West Bengal State Food Processing Corporation already exports flowers to the Netherlands and to the UAE.
