Cotton Boost for contract farming in cotton Our Correspondent
Madurai , Jan. 2 CONTRACT farming for the cultivation of cotton is to be promoted in the Perambalur district.
At the initiation of the agriculture department, Super Spinning Mills from Coimbatore and Appachi Cotton Mills from Pollachi, have come forward to partake in the effort. They have agreed to facilitate credit links to the farmers and procure directly from the fields the produce at a price, five per cent above the prevailing market rate. The step, while eliminates middlemen, will enable the farmers to earn remunerative price for their produce, it is said.
According to the District Collector, Mr S. Natarajan, cotton was cultivated in about 18,000 hectares. However in the last few years, the area under cotton cultivation came down to around 1,000 acres, due to price fluctuations and pest attack.
