Science & Technology Anna University to launch micro satellite Plans to start management institute Our Bureau
Chennai , Dec. 31 ANNA University is to launch a micro satellite, establish a management institute - Anna School of Management - and start a bachelor's programme in petroleum engineering. These are some of the initiatives to be taken up by the University in 2004. Teachers and students of Anna University will fabricate the satellite with technical and financial assistance from Indian Space Research Organisation, the University's Vice-Chancellor, Prof E. Balagurusamy, told newspersons here today. The total cost of the project would be Rs 5 crore, he said. Anna University will be first educational institution in the country to have its own satellite for educational purposes. The micro-satellite would be launched into space on the ISRO Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle. It would help disseminate educational information among institutions, he said. The institution would also be a local centre for ISRO's Education Satellite (Edusat). To be launched in June 2004, Edusat would provide ICT (information, communication and technology) based education. The University would set up a base station in its campus for Edusat to cater to the needs of the four southern States, Goa and Pondicherry, he said. On the MBA programme, Prof Balagurusamy said it is to be set up in partnership with corporates in July 2004. It would meet the manpower requirement of automotive, healthcare, information technology and biotechnology sectors in the region. The University is also to sign an agreement with Indian Oil Corporation in a few days for the petroleum engineering bachelor's programme with inputs in geology, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical and industrial engineering, he said. During 2004, the University would also launch an industrial incubation facilitation centre, Tamil Nadu State Level Placement Cell and establish academic staff college, he said. The University will not seek funds from the State Government to take up the above projects, he said.
