Chennai , Dec. 26

TTK-LIG is the first condom manufacturer in the world to win an award from the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance for setting new quality standards in its manufacturing process.

Mr J. Srinivasan, TTK-LIG's Managing Director, today told newspersons that the Japanese institute presented the company with the Total Productive Maintenance award on December 9.

TTK-LIG's plants in Chennai and Virdhunagar qualified for the TPM award. The company has another plant in Pondicherry. Kohinoor and Durex are among the company's important brands.

The new standards have helped the company reduce manufacturing costs by 15 per cent and increase quality rate to 99 per cent (92 per cent) said a company release.

Mr Srinivasan said the company's next goal is to become the lowest cost manufacturer in the world. He added the company was on its way there. SSL International, the company's UK-based collaborator, had informed them that TTK-LIG was its lowest cost sourcing point.

Currently, about 55-60 per cent of TTK-LIG's Rs 179-crore turnover comes from exports. The company's condoms are sent to more than 45 countries. TTK-LIG's media release said that it also manufactures Durex, the largest brand in the world, for overseas markets.
