Knitwear & Hosiery Knitwear exports from Tirupur up 17% in Jan-Nov G. Gurumurthy
Coimbatore , Dec. 25 TIRUPUR knitwear exporters managed to post a double-digit growth in their export value in dollar term during Jan-Nov 2003 period. This is despite the strong rupee, which exerted pressure on garment exporters. The value of exports between January and November by the knitwear exporters from Tirupur region (which incidentally is widely known as the direct shipments from Tirupur-based production lines) has shown a jump of $105.6 million or 16.6 per cent over the corresponding period of 2002 calendar. According to the knitwear export figures from Tirupur region furnished by the Apparel Export Promotion Council, the total value of exports in the first eleven months ending November 2003 stood at $741.60 million as compared to $636 million. In fact, the rupee term value of export too has shown almost double digit growth of 10 per cent at Rs 3,560 crore as of end-November 2003 as against Rs 2,989 crore for the same period in 2002. The robust exports from Tirupur, of course, have been reported during the first six months this year when the average monthly exports have registered 22.5 per cent increase in value and 16 per cent rise in quantity of exports. The eleven months cumulative quantitative exports from Tirupur this year works out to 3,543 lakh pieces as compared to 3,271 lakh pieces exported during the same period in 2002. The sharp increase in the value of knitwear exports from the region this year has reflected in the appreciation in the per unit value posted this year. The per-piece unit value of export has risen to $2.09 in the first 11 months as against $1.94 recorded in the previous calendar year.
