A merchant vessel of Essar Shipping Company stuck off the Visakhapatnam coast. Thirteen crew members were rescued by the Coast Guard.

Visakhapatnam , Dec. 17

A MERCHANT vessel of Essar Shipping Company, m.v. Nand Kawas, was caught in the severe cyclonic storm in the Bay of Bengal off the Visakhaptnam coast and the Coast Guard rescued 13 crew members aboard the stricken vessel on Tuesday morning.

Coast Guard officials said at a press meet here on Wednesday that a distress message had been received here from the vessel on Monday and the Chennai office had been alerted.

A Coast Guard vessel (CGS Vijaya) had been sent to the spot _ 180 nautical miles from here _ from Chennai. By then, the stricken vessel had suffered extensive damage in the storm. The conduit pipes, railings and accommodation ladder were ripped off and all attempts to restart the vessel proved unsuccessful. The vessel was, therefore, abandoned on the high seas at 11.20 a.m. on Tuesday and the crew was brought here safely.

The 13 crew members rescued by the Coast Guard Vessel, Vijaya, from the storm-stricken vessel of Essar Shipping Co, in Vizag.

Meanwhile, another vessel from the Essar Shipping, m.v. Badri, arrived here on Wednesday.
