Education Logistics - Shipping Mercantile marine dept to set up examination centre at Kochi Our Bureau
Kochi , Dec 15 THE Mercantile Marine Department will set up an examination centre at Kochi for higher categories of sailors, the Shipping Secretary, Mr D.T. Joseph, has said. The first centre will be operational in Delhi by January next year and Kochi will be the next centre of examination, he said while inaugurating the seminar on `Emerging challenges in national shipping - Ports and ships' organised by the Institute of Marine Engineers (India) here. Currently, seafarers from the country have to either go to Mumbai or Chennai to take examinations, he said. He pointed out that the maritime constituency was a divided lot and called for co-operation and exchange of ideas so that Indian maritime potential could be exploited to the full. The Cochin Marine Seminar is being organised by the institute periodically once in five years to bring out latest trends in shipping and its impact on shipyards, ports and shipping as a whole. The Institute of Marine Engineers (India) is a professional body formed under the Mumbai Public Trust Act 1950. The main aim of the institute is to impart knowledge and update technological developments in marine engineering and related activities to its members, industry and to the society. The Kochi Port Chairman, Dr Jacob Thomas, the Chairman and Managing Director of Cochin Shipyard, Cmde M.K. Murthy, the President of the institute, Mr K.A. Simon and the Chairman of the institute, Mr K.A. Vargehese, spoke.
