Automobiles Industry & Economy - Automobiles Good ride for cars in Nov; sales up 41 pc Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec 12 DESPITE approaching the end of the year, car sales saw healthy growth during November buoyed by attractive discounts and freebies on offer as well as indications by several car majors of an impending price increase in the new year. Sales surged by 41.3 per cent in the month to 58,166 units from 41,146 units in the same month last year, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed. Almost all the major carmakers saw good growth in the month. While market leader Maruti Udyog posted a 45.4 per cent rise in sales, Hyundai Motor went up by 20.3 per cent to 11,056 units. Sales of Tata Motors surged by 44.4 per cent to 8,304 units. Meanwhile, boosted by new model and variant roll outs General Motors and Ford clocked 173.6 per cent and 94.4 per cent rise in sales at 1,245 and 1,598 units respectively. Commercial vehicles too saw good growth with sales jumping by 54.1 per cent to 21,860 units from 14,183 units. Both medium and heavy trucks and buses and light commercial vehicles saw good growth, with a sales increase of 66.4 per cent and 36.5 per cent, respectively. Commercial vehicles, particularly trucks, have witnessed strong demand this fiscal due to various infrastructure development projects, and cyclical replacement by fleet operators. Two-wheeler sales, however, increased by a modest 5.8 per cent to 4,80,054 units, mainly on account of the single digit growth seen in the motorcycle segment. Motorcycle sales grew five per cent to 3,77,095 units from 359,120 units. Sales of Hero Honda Motors rose by 26 per cent to 2,01,277 units while Bajaj Auto increased by a modest 7.3 per cent to 85,092 units. The TVS Motor Company and Yamaha Motor India, however, respectively suffered a 32.8 per cent and 24.5 per cent drop in sales in the month. Meanwhile, the sale of scooters and scooterettes went up by 9.7 per cent to 77,469 units from 70,609 units.
