Micro Labs is licensed to manufacture and market two of Eurodrug molecules namely Spasmopriv and Metadoxil.

Bangalore , Dec. 12

MICRO Labs and Belgian pharma company Eurodrug Laboratories have said that they are exploring various options for alliance including a joint manufacturing facility in Thailand as their strategy to cover South East Asia.

The two already have a tie-up for marketing and licensed manufacturing of several drugs in India and in the markets of Eurodrug. Senior officials of the two companies said the proposed alliance would cover Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Colombia and Hungary. Eurodrug has a formulation production facility in Thailand.

The Rs 430-crore Micro Labs is licensed to manufacture and market two of Eurodrug molecules, the just launched Spasmopriv for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and the upcoming Metadoxil, besides others in the pipeline.

The $50-million Belgian company, which has a significant presence in South East Asia, and Latin America, has also licensed five products of Micro Labs including Amlong, Dianorm and folic acid product Biofer for marketing in those countries and plans to add 15 more to the list, according to Mr Prabha Shankar, its Country Manager based in Hyderabad. It would also be Micro Lab's source for new generic and patented molecules to be made in India.

The move comes at a time when Micro Labs is planning its IPO during 2004-05. Mr G.D. Saini, Vice-President (International Business Development), said the real shape of the East Asian venture would be known during 2004-05, though various solutions are being considered to exploit either company's strengths in different countries.

Mr Saini said the second Eurodrug product, Metadoxil, for chronic hepatitis was before the DCGI for approval and would be launched in February 2004.

The domestic anti-IBS market is estimated at Rs 60 crore and Micro Labs expects a revenue of Rs 6 crore in the first year, said Mr G. Jayaraj, General Manager (Products) Micro Labs, and Mr B.R. Srinath, General Manager (Sales & Marketing). It will be joining players in gastrointestinal segment such as Dr Reddy's, Torrent, Lupin, Solvay, TTK and German Remedies.

The company is putting up new plants with an investment of Rs 100-crore. Mr Jayaraj said that by mid-2004, it would ready its large, FDA-standard cephalosporin plant at Bommasandra near here.
