People Coal India helm: Yet another ad hoc arrangement Badal Sanyal
Kolkata , Dec. 6 WHILE the suspension order on the regular chairman of Coal India Ltd (CIL), Mr N.K. Sharma, has remained unaltered, the Union Ministry of Coal has made another ad hoc arrangement for the chairmanship with the incumbent Chairman, Mr Lakshmi Chand, relinquishing the post after he was promoted as the Secretary in the Union Ministry of Industry on December 2. Mr Chand, Additional Secretary in the Union Ministry of Coal, was holding additional charge as the CIL Chairman since Mr Sharma was suspended in early June this year. However, Mr Shashi Kumar, Director (Marketing), has been asked to take additional charge as Chairman till further orders. Meanwhile, the company's Director (Personnel) retired on November 30 prior to the appointment of his successor. Incidentally, the personnel department plays a vital role in the company, which employees more than five lakh workers and staff and over 18,000 executives through different subsidiary companies. The ad hoc arrangement in the position of Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Bharat Coking Coal Ltd, one of the CIL's sick subsidiaries, was ended with the appointment of Mr Parth Bhattacherjee, as a regular CMD for the company, who was earlier Director (Technical) of Western Coalfields Ltd.
