Announcements WHO pre-qualifies Ranbaxy's AIDS drug combination Our Bureau
New Delhi , Dec. 3 RANBAXY Laboratories Ltd said today that the World Health Organisation (WHO) has pre-qualified its triple drug anti-AIDS fixed doze combination, Triviro-LNS 30 and 40mg tablets, sold in India as Virolans. The product, a bio-equivalent of the individual innovator drugs, are available in several developing countries and in India for nearly two years, the pharma company said in a communiqué issued here. It is priced at Rs 1,200 per month to a patient in the domestic market. Explaining the significance of "pre-qualification" by WHO, company officials said that it was a virtual endorsement of the drug and would guide countries looking to switch from a combination of ARVS or a multiple-pill regime to a single pill therapy. "This would be more convenient to a patient, besides being less expensive," the official said. The product is a first line ARV treatment for HIV positive patients who have been prescribed the regimen. Triviro-LNS is a combination of two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI).
