Hyderabad , Dec. 2 THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister and Chairman of National Task Force on Micro Irrigation, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, has said that the task force will submit a report to the Centre by the month-end. The report will give a comprehensive roadmap for micro-irrigating potential and prospects, including the need to extend subsidies to encourage the farm sector. Mr Naidu, who was addressing a visiting delegation of Israeli experts and companies engaged in agri-food processing sector in the country, said micro irrigation has great potential in changing the profile of agricultural sector particularly in relatively dry tracts of the country. "We can do what Israel has managed to do so over the years to the semi-arid region with high-end micro irrigation systems," he said. The Andhra Pradesh Government, which is in the process of implementing a major micro irrigation project with an outlay of Rs 1,200 crore, has recently awarded the contract to seven companies, which include some Israeli firms. Mr Naidu said: "We need to ensure that best farm practices were adopted so that the cost of production was brought down further while increasing the overall productivity. This would be possible by adopting new technologies and best practices including micro irrigation systems. "Since India is a large country and we need to expand its applicability, we will extend certain concessions for micro irrigation systems both at the State as also at the Centre. This could mean waiver of local taxes and levies. A detailed plan of action to meet this requirement will be submitted to the Centre," he said.
