Visakhapatnam , Nov. 27

HONEY bees play a vital role in preserving bio-diversity, conservation of flora in a particular eco zone and improvement of agricultural yields and, therefore, a concerted effort should be made to make bee-keeping an integral feature of agriculture, according to experts.

This was stated at the three-day national conference on "Sustainability of pollen and pollinator resources for food and nutritional security'', organised by the Andhra University here.

Dr D. Rajagopal, the Director of Instruction, University of Agricultural Sciences (Bangalore), said there were as many as 2.5 lakh species of flora in the world and pollinators such as honeybees were helping in the propagation and survival of these species.

At least 10 beehives should be reared per hectare of cultivated land, he added.
