WHILE India has 12 million retail outlets and the size of the retail market runs into billions of rupees, supply chain management, customer relations and mall development are posing several challenges for the industry.
An interactive working session on the second day of the World Economic Forum saw Mr Rajeev Bakshi, Chairman PepsiCo India Holdings, Mr Sanjiv Goenka, Vice-Chairman, RPG Enterprises, and Mr Suman Bery, Director-General, National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), elaborating on the issues required to put the retail trade in India on the right track.
"The modernisation of the retail industry will require the Government's participation," Mr Goenka said, while presenting a 10-point agenda for the industry.
"Recognise retail as an industry, implement national VAT, provide incentives for cold chains, abolish octroi, and re-examine the relevance of the maximum retail price (MRP) regime."
According to Mr Goenka, an immediate need existed to "set our own house in order".
Among the key challenges that needed to be addressed is consolidation of retail operations.
Mr Bakshi, meanwhile, said that the Indian market posed very different challenges compared to other markets.
"Delicate balance is required between trade marketing and above-the-line marketing," he added.
