Power Jayalalithaa seeks PM help to expedite power project Our Bureau
Chennai , Nov. 23 THE Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, has sought the Prime Minister, Mr Atal Bihari Vajpayee's intervention for an early approval of the Union Environment and Forests Ministry to lay a power transmission line in the reserved forests of the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts. This is to transmit power from the Pykara Ultimate State Hydro Electric project with a capacity of 150 MW. In January, the Government recommended a proposal from the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board to the Union Environment and Forest Ministry for diversion of 10.04 hectares of forest land in the Nilgiris and 19.857 hectares in Coimbatore for laying the transmission line along the existing (transmission line) corridor. As the TNEB requires at least six months to lay the transmission line and the project is likely to be commissioned in March next year, an immediate approval of the Union Environment and Forests Ministry was required, Ms Jayalalithaa has said in the letter to Mr Vajpayee. The Forest Advisory Committee of the Union Environment and Forests Ministry has also taken up the proposal in August and further clarifications sought by the Ministry are being furnished by the State Department of Forests, the letter, released to the media here ,on Sunday says. Ms Jayalalithaa has said the project, commenced in 1995, is likely to be commissioned in March 2004. Out of the Rs 383-crore project cost, Rs 340 crore has been spent so far. Electricity, to be generated from the project, has to be transmitted by an 85 km long transmission line traverse 13.42 km in the reserved forest of the two districts. The power generating station itself is in the midst of the reserved forest areas of the Nilgiris. Early commissioning of the project will help meet the State's increasing power requirement, Ms Jayalalithaa has said in the letter.
