Gem & jewellery export council opens office in Kolkata

Kolkata , Nov. 19

THE Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, the country's apex body for the gems & jewellery industry, here on Wednesday announced the opening of its first office in the city. The office is to be located at the International Trade Facilitation Centre.

The objective of the office will be to help promote gem & jewellery exports from the eastern region.

Inaugurating the office, the Council's Chairman, Mr Sanjoy Kothari, urged the jewellery manufacturers in the eastern region to actively participate and support the industry's vision of reaching the $16-billion export mark by 2007.

It was pointed out that the council was actively working towards getting into the high-end jewellery segment globally and would participate in at least eight exhibitions in 2004 to accelerate the industry's growth.

He said the gems & jewellery industry was lobbying hard with the Union Ministry of Commerce for bringing about cluster development in places such as Rajkot and Coimbatore. The objective of such development was to strengthen the competitiveness of smaller units in these areas by developing a consensus-based vision.

Mr Kothari said that although exports of some commodities had gone down in recent times due to the appreciation of the dollar, the gem & jewellery industry had shown remarkable growth. It registered a half yearly growth of 13.61 per cent with total industry exports touching $4,784 million compared to $4,211 million during the same period last year.

He said that the council would soon inaugurate a national institute of gem & jewellery in Mumbai, which would be the country's foremost institute for jewellery designing and manufacturing.
