Speed Run 2003 to be held in Bangalore

THE Bangalore round of the two-day Speed Run 2003, the acceleration race for two and four-wheelers will be held from November 22.

"We expect to have at least 200 entries for the Bangalore round," Mr Hormazd Sorabjee, the editor of Autocar, the co-sponsor of the event told newspersons on Wednesday.

Mr Sorabjee said the event would test the vehicle's strength and fitness apart from the driver's reflexes. "The event has the potential to become extremely popular," he said.

The Speed Run is essentially drag racing, a form of motorsport popular all over the world. A drag race is an acceleration test over a quarter mile or 402 metres. The participants who clock the fastest time over this distance are declared the winners. The last speed race held in Mumbai drew over 200 entries. The prize money for the race is around Rs 4.5 lakh with several categories to increase the chances of winning.

The classification for Indian bikes includes bikes up to 110 cc, 111— 150 cc, 260 - 360 cc, up to 110 cc (4 stroke), 111-160 cc (4 stroke), 161 - 250 cc (4 stroke) and the Indian Open class. For foreign bikes, the classification includes bikes up to 500 cc, 501-750 cc, 750 cc and above and foreign open. There is also a contest for show jumping and the fastest wheelie over 1/8th mile.

In Indian cars, the classification includes cars up to 800 cc, 801— 1000 cc, 1001 - 1400 cc, Maruti Zens with Esteem engine, 1401— 1600 cc, above 1600 cc and Indian Open. Classification for foreign cars includes cars up to 2000 cc, 2001— 3000 cc, 3001 and above and foreign open. There is also a ladies class in cars for the event. The participation fee in each category is Rs 300.

Bharat Petroleum's General Manager for Retail Strategy and Brand, Mr S. Ramesh, said the company plans to associate itself with similar events.
