Water released from Vaigai dam

Our Correspondent

MADURAI: THE Public Works Department has released an additional 150 cusecs of water from Vaigai dam.

According to Mr P. Ramaraju, Joint Director (Agriculture), the water has been released to enable the farmers to prepare the land for transplantation.

In many areas, the plants are 5 to 20 days old. The total transplanted area would reach 15,000 acres by next week.

Though the storage has been increasing despite the release of water since November 2, at least another 2,500 mcft of fresh inflow into the dams through rainfall is indispensable for successful harvesting, he added.

Majority of farmers are, however, doubtful of sustained supply of water and opted for short-term crops. The cultivation of an alternative crop is yet to catch up with them, it is said.
