AP aid for PHCs

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government has sanctioned Rs 60 crore for constructing buildings to house 210 primary healthcare centres (PHCs) and 10 District Medical and Health Offices in the State.

"Of the 1474 PHCs in the State, as many as 350 PHCs are housed in dilapidated buildings. Of them, 210 centres would have good buildings by the March-end, each costing Rs 25 lakh," Mr Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, Minister for Health, told newsmen on Saturday.

Giving a region-wise break-up for the PHC infrastructure sanctions, the Minister said 81 PHCs in Telengana, 92 in coastal Andhra and 37 centres in Rayalaseema would be part of the project.

The new buildings would have at least six beds to take care of emergency cases, the Minister said.

Besides, the proposed buildings for the 10 DM&HOs would house a variety of offices that looked into different health services to bring in better coordination. The DM and HOs at Anantapur, Kadapa, Guntur, Khammam, Krishna, Mahboobnagar, Medak and Nizamabad are included in the list.

He said the Government has recently recruited 140 doctors in tribal areas. "We are also rationalising the posts with a view to redeploying them according to the needs. We also intend to recruit people to man the PHCs," the Minister said.
