Raw deal to TN on Cauvery, says CM

Our Bureau

The State Government has held several rounds of discussions with Karnataka to no avail.

Chennai , Nov. 6

THE State can hope for a fair treatment in the Cauvery issue only if a non-BJP, non-Congress, and non-Janata Dal Government takes over at the Centre, according to the Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa.

Intervening during debate on the demand for supplementary grants in the Assembly on Thursday, the Chief Minister said that the AIADMK would work to bring in such a Government at the Centre. Only then would the State's voice be heard and justice be meted out.

What purpose would further talks with the Karnataka Government serve, she queried. The Tamil Nadu Government has held several rounds of discussions with Karnataka to no avail. Even directions from statutory authorities have not helped, she said. The Karnataka Government has not obeyed the interim orders of the Cauvery Disputes Tribunal. Her Government has had to approach the Supreme Court and the Cauvery River Authority chaired by the Prime Minister, but Karnataka Government has not heeded their directions, she said. The State Government cannot be faulted on its approach, even recently it had written to the Prime Minister to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority. Though the Centre has acknowledged receipt of the letter, the meeting is yet to be convened, she said.

According to Ms Jayalalithaa, the Centre, whether it was ruled by Congress, BJP or Janata Dal, was loath to antagonise the people of Karnataka because of the vote bank.
