THE Planning Commission Deputy Chairman, Mr K.C. Pant, has said that there was a need for a task force to address the issues faced by the country's mining sector and the industry should focus more on its social responsibility.
Addressing the valedictory session of the 19th World Mining Conference here on Wednesday, Mr Pant said that the mines sector would have to muster more public support for mineral exploration activities to meet national strategic targets. Moreover, international cooperation was needed to bridge the demand-supply gaps, he said.
Pointing out that most countries had opened up mineral exploration at a time when prices were low and exploration budgets were under strain, Mr Pant said there was a need to step up investment in the sector.
The Deputy Chairman said that the mining industry should focus on its social responsibility and self-regulate itself, especially on issues relating to the environment, occupational health and mine closure.
