TOONZ Animation India has announced that the veteran animation expert, Mr Bill Mathews of Walt Disney Feature Animation, is being appointed Special Advisor to the proposed animation academy, which it is co-promoting with the West Bengal Electronics Industry Development Corporation (Webel).

Webel is a nodal agency of the Government of West Bengal for promotion of IT and ITES industry in the State and also is responsible for implementing its policy initiatives in the allied sectors. Earlier in September, Toonz Animation had signed a memorandum of understanding committing itself into a long-term partnership with Webel, initiating the process for establishing of the academy. It will be based in Kolkata.

Speaking to newspersons here, Mr Bill Dennis, Chief Executive Officer, Toonz Animation, said Mr Mathews would help develop the curriculum for the animation academy. Mr Mathews would also partake in the initial student portfolio reviews and interview at Kolkata. He would also be a member of the advisory board.

Toonz Animation later introduced Messrs Paul Driessen and Joel Slayton who would later officiate the proceedings on day two of the Week With The Masters fest.

Commenting on the state of the animation industry in India, Mr Driessen said that the country has had to largely fall back on folklore and mythology for content. He said that he was looking forward to see how the industry coped when a shift from the traditional content became necessary.

Prof Slayton said there was a strong animator community in the US looking to India for inspiration. He said he had learnt from his interactions with students about the enthusiasm for experimenting with new content and concepts.
