Radio/TV Authority for cable TV mooted Our Correspondent
MADURAI: The Cable Operators Guild, a city-based organisation, has demanded that the State Government should form a separate authority for regulating the activities of cable television industry. Mr S. Pandi, Secretary of the Guild has said that the introduction of set-top box (STB) under the Conditional Access System (CAS) in Chennai has exposed the real viewer ship of the channels, forcing many of them to become free to air (FTA) again. The CAS norms are also not followed up in letter and spirit. In Chennai, subscribers are denied viewing of a particular bundle of Tamil pay channels. Pay channels that have turned FTA are collecting money from subscribers in other parts of the State. Mr.Pandi said the industry lacks accountability in terms of money transactions. Absence of an effective regulatory authority has left too many loose ends. The Guild, Mr Pandi said, has decided to file a counter in a case seeking cancellation of STBs in Chennai pending before the High Court.
