MARK Hughes, the founder of Herbalife International, grew up in a troubled environment, which made him realise the value of a `helping hand' in childhood.
In 1994, he initiated the Herbalife Family Foundation (HFF) to provide financial assistance to charitable organisations and funds dedicated to helping `at-risk' children everywhere. HFF was set up with an initial endowment of $8 million from Hughes' personal Herbalife stock.
In India, HFF started working on corporate social responsibility projects from 1999. According to Mr Mr Manoj Shirodkar, Country Director, Herbalife International India Pvt Ltd, "We wanted to work with an organisation that practices transparency in the usage of funds and has an interest in children's upbringing. The SOS Children's Village in Bangalore fulfilled both the requirements."
Thus, for four years now, Herbalife has been donating a house to the SOS village. "The first three years we sponsored houses in their Bangalore village. Last year, as we had just set an office in Calcutta, we donated a house there." Each house costs about Rs 15 lakh.
