Bengal seeks investment in infotech industry

Chennai , Sept. 19

INVESTORS in information technology sector now have an offer that they cannot refuse - West Bengal, according to the State's Information Technology Minister, Mr Manabendra Mukherjee.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he said that West Bengal is an ideal destination for those looking to expanding their operations in India or newly set up shop. The State has a clear policy to encourage information technology, an attractive package of incentives, the skilled human resource and the infrastructure that an investor needs.

West Bengal has built a strong base for investors with every major name in information technology setting up shop. And they are a happy lot. The Government has clear focus on developing and using information technology for development, Mr Mukherjee said.

Responding to a query, he said that perceptions pose a problem. West Bengal, which has earned a reputation for labour problems, has to live it down. But the environment has undergone a sea change. There has not been one problem in the last few years in information technology sector. Labour unrest was an issue between 1947 and 1977, and outcome of the socio political scenario. But post-1977 when the Left Front took over it has been an example for stability. There have been just two Chief Ministers in period when even Tamil Nadu has had five. An entirely new generation has come through, he said.

According to Mr G.D. Gautama, Principal Secretary - Information Technology, West Bengal, it is the only State to declare information technology enabled services as a public utility service, it permits women to work on night shifts and has put in place simple procedures including relaxation in zoning laws and exemption from pollution control that make it easier for investors.
