Technology Nanofiltration to treat textile dye effluents Our Bureau
Chennai , Sept. 18 ENVIRONMENTAL Care Engineers, the Chennai-based effluent treatment consultants, have developed a nanofiltration-based technology for treating inlet dye bath in textile dyeing units. The company's Managing Director, Mr V.K. Somakumar, told presspersons here that the application of nanofiltration system is a novel initiative in textile dyeing units, and is an efficient and low-cost method compared to evaporator systems. The added advantage in nanofiltration is that the water and dissolved salts in the effluent are recovered for reuse, the load on evaporator systems brought down significantly and the discharge is negligible. The system has been tried out on a commercial scale, the technology proven, and is now being marketed, he said. Nanofiltration involves using membranes for filtering out at the molecular level, waste from the dye bath effluent. Over 70 per cent of the inlet dye bath can be treated to obtain crystal clear brine solution containing over 85-90 per cent of the inlet salt. Thus, the unit's salt consumption can be brought down to 15 per cent. The waste is thus highly concentrated because the water is removed and can be handled easily by the evaporator. It also avoids generation of the huge quantities of sludge that are a problem in conventional systems, he said. According to Mr Somakumar, a 50,000-litre-per-day nanofilter unit will cost over Rs 16 lakh and the operational cost of handling the effluent, including the cost of changing the filtration membrane, works out to about 4 or 5 paise per litre. An equivalent evaporator system would cost about Rs 45 lakh with an operational cost of 20 paise per litre.
