Telecommunications Bharti against unified licences in `present form' Our Bureau
New Delhi , Sept. 9 THE unified licensing regime proposed by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) should not be pursued in its present form, as it would go against the final judgment of the Telecom Dispute Settlement Tribunal (TDSAT) on limited mobility (WLL), according to Mr Sunil Mittal, Chairman, Bharti Group. After a "regular meeting" with the Union Communications Minister, Mr Arun Shourie, he noted that while the TDSAT had talked about service specific licences, the proposed unified licence is talking about merging the basic and cellular licences. In other words, while the Tribunal has stated that the basic operators should provide basic services and cellular operators should provide mobile services, the first question that unified licence asks is how, why and when can fixed line operators be allowed to do mobile. .
