Naidu seeks probe into multi-crore stamp scam

Hyderabad , Sept. 9

THE Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Mr N.Chandrababu Naidu, has said that he would write to the Union Deputy Prime Minister, Mr L.K. Advani, to institute a CBI inquiry into the multi-crore stamp scam involving several States, and where a former TDP Minister, is alleged to have been involved.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Mr Naidu said repeated requests for a CBI inquiry were not considered earlier and as the scam has turned out to be, it had now gone beyond Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and several other States including Delhi. This means a concerted effort would be necessary to punish the guilty and break the network. Alongside this, Mr Naidu said an inquiry headed by a senior State police official, Mr Kamal Kumar, would go into the details of the stamp scam related issues and also enquire if there was any negligence on the part of State Police in apprehending the guilty.

"No one accused in the scam will be allowed to go scot-free. And we would co-operate with all investigating agencies", he said.

Narrating the chronology of events that led to the recent arrest of the TDP MLA and a former Minister, Mr Krishna Yadav, Mr Naidu said several letters were addressed to the Finance Minister, including one in January this year impressing upon him the importance of the amendment of the archaic India Stamp Act and institute a CBI inquiry into the issue.

However, as things stand today, the magnitude of the case seems to have surprised everyone, after the recent seizure of a printing press in Nashik for fake stamps. Now it is clear that only a concerted effort will help track the fake stamp network spread across several States including Andhra Pradesh.

With regard to the seizure of a tape that had recorded the voice of Mr Krishna Yadav from the premises of the prime accused Abdul Kareem Tyagi, Mr Naidu said that preliminary investigations had revealed that the voice conformed to that of Mr Yadav. There was no direct relevance with him till the date of seizure and therefore, there was no question of Police negligence here.
