Kochi , Aug. 29

SUSPECTED activists of the Ayyankali Pada, a banned Naxal outfit in the State, ransacked a Coca-Cola godown in the heart of the city and destroyed the soft drinks by dousing them with kerosene and diesel before setting them on fire.

The incident took place on Friday at around 10.30 am in the godown of Famous Marketing Company located near Kadavanthra when 15 men launched the attack while cola bottles were being loaded into a delivery vehicle. They raised slogans and also brandished swords and iron roads to scare away the employees.

According to senior police officials, the attackers came in singles and jointly conducted the attack and escaped as the police came. They entered the godown and set fire to a few crates of cola bottles.

The godown premises were strewn with broken bottles of Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite and pamphlets containing revolutionary messages. Around 400 bottles and a few crates were damaged. The fire brigade, which rushed to the spot put out the blaze. No one was hurt in the incident.

The pamphlets that were strewn in the premises exhorted the people to boycott cola products since they were manufactured by `imperialists'. The organisation also gave a call to destroy cola products since they were found to contain poisonous residues.

According to the pamphlet, attempts are being made at the State/Central Government levels to protect the cola companies, despite lab findings that they were toxic.
