Public Sector Banks Andhra Bank picks B-school students Our Bureau
Coimbatore , Aug. 28 ANDHRA Bank has, among the nationalised banks, taken a lead in picking management graduates off-campus, its General Manager Mr V.R. Venkataraman, told Business Line. Chatting informally on the sidelines of a function organised by the Bharathiar School of Management and Entrepreneur Development, Mr Venkataraman said that 42 students from top rank B-Schools had been placed in the middle management level in the bank. "We find some of them really strong in credit analysis, risk management, forex and of course marketing. They are technically sound. On-the-job training has been imparted for practical orientation," he added. The gradual liberalisation of the Indian financial system and growing integration of the domestic market with the external market, the risk associated with the bank's operations have become complex and large requiring strategic management. The B-School students are good at grasping the emerging complexities in the financial system. He observed that until recently, the nationalised banks did not have to knock on the clients' doors. But hectic competition from within and the private sector banks had forced the nationalised banks to imbibe technology and canvass its product range. According to him, the advent of technology had brought with it revolutionary changes in the banking system. "Work is far simpler, but stringent disclosure norms, ensuring greater transparency, intense competition among banks and the rate war, reconciliation of balances on a day-to-day basis etc., compel bankers to work over time. Banking is no longer a 10 to 5 vocation. Despite the ATMs and branch network (read interconnection), the workload and targets are no easier," he added.
