Kochi , Aug. 28

THE domestic coir sector would generate additional employment to one lakh people under the `Swarna Jayanthi Coir Vikas Yojana' in select 50 clusters over a period of 10 years covering Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Goa, Maharashtra and Tripura, according to Mr Sangh Priya Gautam, Union Minister of State for Agro and Rural Industries.

Addressing a conference here on Thursday, the Minister said it would take up these new initiatives for the welfare of the industry at a total cost of Rs 15 crore. "Quality improvement will be given more emphasis during the Golden Jubilee year through organisation of quality camps, EDP programme etc.," Mr Gautam said. Mr Gautam said that the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, had recently undertaken a study on the use of coconut coir pith for uptake of uranium for aqueous solutions. The BARC, he said, has evinced interest in entering into collaboration with the Central Research Institute of the Coir Board to undertake further studies to evaluate the usefulness of coir pith as an absorbent for the uptake of uranium.

Efforts were underway to encourage exporters for ensuring better utilisation of provisions under market development assistance (MDA) scheme for promoting the existing markets as well as exploring new markets, the Minister added.
