CAS rollout in 3 metros may run into rough weather

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Aug. 27

THE Government's plans of implementing Conditional Access System (CAS) in the three metros of Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata may run into rough weather with both the Shiv Sena and the Left-ruled West Bengal Government opposing it. While CAS has been deferred in Delhi due to its "politicisation before elections", it was decided that the system would be rolled out in Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata as planned from September 1.

However, the Shiv Sena chief, Mr Bal Thackeray, today said that he is still not in favour of CAS in the metropolis and wondered, "Why the Government was marketing the new system." The West Bengal Government has also expressed its reservations over the deferment of CAS in Delhi and has sought a postponement in Kolkata as well.

Today, the Shiv Sena MP, Mr Sanjay Nirupam, met the Information and Broadcasting (I&B) Minister, Mr Ravi Shankar Prasad, and asked him not to implement CAS in the present format.

The Shiv Sena has been asking the I&B Minister to implement CAS first in the Capital and later introduce it in Mumbai. So even as there is a question mark on CAS, officials from the I&B Ministry have gone to Kolkata to oversee the CAS preparations in the city.
