Oilseeds & Edible Oil Kharif oilseeds acreage to rise Our Bureau
Mumbai , Aug. 24 THE overall outlook for kharif 2003 oilseeds production appears to be very encouraging due to good climatic conditions, according to New Delhi-based VMA Oilseeds Research and Development Institute (VORDI). Although the normal area under kharif oilseeds is 150 lakh hectares, by the first week of August this year, area covered under oilseed crops was an estimated 129 lakh hectares, up from 104 lakh hectares same time last year. Sowing operations were continuing in some parts of southern States and were expected to be completed by month-end. Crops are now attaining vegetative to early flowering stage, Dr G. Chandra, Consultant to VORDI, said in his latest report. Significant improvement over last year in soyabean (65 lakh hectares) and groundnut (41 lakh hectares) acreage has been noticed. Area under groundnut can expand further in the southern region. Area coverage for sesamum is estimated at 13.4 lakh hectares.
