Monsoon places mulberry sericulture on recovery path

Vishwanath Kulkarni

Bangalore , Aug. 24

THE country's mulberry sericulture, after suffering a setback last year due to the drought and dumping of Chinese silk, is seen heading towards recovery tracking good monsoons, better cocoon and yarn prices over the last couple of months.

``There is a revival of interest in the sector as farmers are seen replanting mulberry in the major growing states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh," said Mr P. Joy Oommen, Member Secretary, Central Silk Board.

Moreover, the firm trend in yarn and cocoon prices over last few months, largely due to the levy of anti-dumping duty on Chinese silk and better off take in the domestic market, is seen boosting confidence of growers over last few months, Mr Oommen said.

The average mulberry silk prices have crossed Rs 1,200 a kg now as against less than Rs 1,000 a kg till few months back, he said. Similarly, the average cocoon prices are hovering above Rs 140 a kg, which is bit higher compared to early part of this calendar.

``The situation has improved over the last month especially in major silk growing districts of Karnataka as Kolar and Mysore, because of better rains as against a near drought like situation in April-May this year,'' he added.

Mulberry silk output suffered a near eight per cent shortfall last fiscal year at 14,617 tonnes as against 15,842 tonnes in the previous year. ``With renewed interest in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, we hope that current fiscal to be a good year for mulberry silk,'' Mr Oommen said.

Moreover, farmers are taking up replanting with improved mulberry varieties like V-1 in particular, which should boost productivity, Mr Oommen said. Some silkworm races are being replaced by new hi-yielding crossbreeds, which should add up to the productivity.

The output of non-mulberry silks increased by close to 12 per cent during last fiscal ocer the previous year.

Production of non-mulberry silks touched 1,702 t during last year as against 1,509 t in previous year.
