New Delhi , Aug. 4

HYUNDAI Motor India Ltd (HMIL) on Monday marked its foray into the sports utility vehicle (SUV) market segment with the launch of the `Terracan'.

The vehicle, being imported as completely built units (CBUs) from Korea, comes equipped with a 2.9 litre CRDi diesel engine and has been priced at Rs 18.49 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), Mr J.I. Kim, Managing Director, HMIL, said at news conference here. The company is targeting to sell about 500 units of the new SUV in the next one year, he said.

The `Terracan' which would be positioned as an off-road vehicle, comes with a five-speed manual transmission along with features such as a part-time four-wheel drive to shift between 2-wheel and 4-wheel driving modes, fully automatic temperature control, and digital multimeter, the HMIL President, Mr B.V.R. Subbu, informed newspersons.

Meanwhile, when asked about the impact of the ongoing workers' strike at the parent company in South Korea on Indian operations, company officials said that operations in India may be affected if the strike continued beyond September.

"We have a buffer stock and are okay till the middle of September. After that, the strike could have an impact on the `Sonata', the `Accent Viva' and the `Accent CRDi' models, which have a lower localisation content. It would, however, not impact our `bread-and-butter' models, the Santro and the Accent," he said.

Elantra coming next year

HYUNDAI Motor India is planning to roll out the premium-end `Elantra' in the Indian market next year.

Speaking to Business Line, Mr J.I. Kim, Managing Director, HMIL, said that the model would be introduced in two variants - a 1.8 litre gasoline engine variant and a 2.0 litre diesel variant.

"We are still in the process of deciding whether to introduce the car as a fully-imported model or whether to bring it through the completely knocked down (CKD) route. In case, we decide upon the CKD route, the Elantra would be introduced before the premium small car `Getz' next year", Mr Kim said.
