The Hindu Business Line : Foreign trade procedures to be streamlined

THE Department of Commerce has initiated steps towards streamlining the procedures of the appellate mechanism available under the Foreign Trade (Development and Regulation) Act, 1992 (FTDR), the Director General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), Mr L. Mansingh, has said.

The streamlining of such procedures is expected to help the exporting community in redressing their grievances in a quicker timeframe.

"We will also examine the need as well as the possibility of putting in place a parallel system on the lines of the one available for settlement under the Customs Act," Mr Mansingh told Business Line on the sidelines of an open house on Exim Policy organised by the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO).

A section of exporters have been demanding that "settlement commissioners" (similar to the Customs Department) be appointed to sort out various issues relating to Exim Policy and the functioning of DGFT.

On the matter of an electronic data linkage between the customs department and the offices of the DGFT, Mr Mansingh said that establishment of the linkage continued to be a "top priority" for the two Government agencies.

Data link between the two agencies would permit the export data to flow from customs to DGFT and the incentive data to flow from DGFT to Customs, avoiding possibilities of misuse and expediting data exchange.
