Power `KPCL plant load factor the highest' Our Bureau
Bangalore , July 20 THE Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has fixed the performance standards of Karnataka Power Corporation as a benchmark for all the State Government utilities in the country. Speaking at a national conference here on "Imperatives for reforms in coal, gas and railways to optimise benefits under the Electricity Act 2003, Mr H.L. Bajaj, Chairman of the CEA, said, " For all performance parameters, we point out the KPCL's standards." He said that that KPCL's plant load factor was the highest among all the utilities in the country and in certain areas, were actually better than those achieved by central utilities. He said that unless operational performance standards were continuously improved, State utilities could not be hoped to keep tariffs low and optimise costs. Earlier, the Chief Minister and Chairman of KPCL, Mr S. M. Krishna, said that more projects were needed for all the southern States for accelerating economic growth. But implementation of some of the hydel power projects were held up due to inter-State disputes, he said. He wanted the Centre to intervene and settle all such disputes. "The Centre has a responsibility to apply the soothing balm for settling inter-State disputes,'' he said. The settlement of disputes could add large hydel capacity and benefit Karnataka, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, he added. Settlement of these disputes, he said, would help keep the power tariffs low and attract investments to all these regions.
