Transco initiates demand side management for farm sector

Hyderabad, July 20

IN order to address the demand side management (DSM) aimed at saving energy consumption by the farm community, the Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh, has initiated a process to constitute special teams of field engineers to create awareness and help them cut on energy costs.

As apart of this initiative, Transco and distribution companies have taken up an incentive scheme for agricultural consumers under which a discount of 50 per cent on monthly energy charges in slab or metered system would be allowed if the farmers opted for energy efficiency devices in the water pumping systems.

Ms Rachel Chatterjee, Chairman and Managing Director of APTransco, in a statement on Sunday said that these demand side management measures would help change the voltage profile and improve current drawals and also slash the power bill of farmers. The issue of burning of farm motors due to low voltage would be eliminated by installing the required capacitors along with motors besides improving the quality of power.

As per the directions of the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission, APTransco has been facilitating farming community in adopting the demand side management measures.

"With the adoption of these measures, the farmers would be able to pay only 10 paise per unit up to 2500 units and 25 paise per unit for the balance consumption wherever meters are provided. This discount is applicable up to March 31, 2006. While the cost of service to agricultural power is Rs 1.81 per unit, the recovery at average tariff is about 31 paise. The power tariff for agricultural consumers in Andhra Pradesh is the lowest compared to other power utilities of various States," the Transco statement claimed.
