The Hindu Business Line : `Speed governors' opposed in Kerala

KOCHI: The Kerala State Private Bus Operators Federation has opposed the recent directive of the State Transport Commissioner to install "speed governors" in private buses plying in the State.

A meeting of the federation held at Thrissur had decided to ignore the directive saying that the ruling was impractical, unscientific, unfair and corruption prone. Mr Khalid Mundampally, President of the federation, said that no other State in the country had made such a stipulation. No study had been carried out to assess the impact of the speed governor.

The speed breaking equipment should be installed at the manufacturing stage by co-ordinating the functioning of the bus engine and the speed mechanism, he said.

The Transport Commissioner has, in a move to check speeding by private buses and thus reduce the number of accidents, directed all private buses to install the machine from September 1. The cut-off speed was 60 kmph. The gadget is said to cost about Rs 25,000.
