Steel Steel output goes up 8.7% in April Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, May 28 THE total production of finished steel in April this year has been provisionally estimated at 26.50 lakh tonnes as against 24.38 lakh tonnes last April, showing an increase of 8.7 per cent, according to figures released by the Ministry of Steel on Wednesday. The total production of pig iron in April 2003 was 4.7 lakh tonnes as against 4.33 lakh tonnes earlier, showing a growth of 8.5 per cent. The apparent consumption of finished steel items in the month was 22.5 lakh tonnes, 4.6 per cent higher than the corresponding period last year. Consumption of pig iron was also up 12 per cent. Both SAIL and the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) have, by and large, achieved their production targets for April 2003 and registered encouraging growth compared to April 2002. National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC), Sponge Iron India Ltd (SIIL), Bharat Refractories Ltd (BRL), Ferro Scrap Nigam Ltd (FSNL) and Manganese Ore India Ltd (MOIL) have all exceeded their production targets for April 2003.
