MANGALORE, May 28

THE Bharatiya Kisan Sangha (BKS) has demanded that the Brahmavara Sugar Factory clear all its outstanding dues to the sugarcane farmers which have been piling up over the past one-and-a-half years.

Speaking to reporters here on Wednesday, the President of the BKS Mangalore taluk unit, Mr Sadashiva Shetty, warned of ``serious action'' on the part of the farmers if the company failed to meet its obligations.

According to Mr Shetty, sugarcane farmers in the region who depend primarily on the sugar factory for their livelihood have been in dire straits for the past two years.

The beleaguered Brahmavara Sugar Factory, according to Mr Shetty, had entered into an agreement to purchase sugarcane during the current year and the outstanding dues for this year alone amount to Rs 1.25 crore.
