BANGALORE, May 21
INDIA'S growing outbound tourist traffic growth has made many a country rush to covet a share. And the Maldives, which is often mistaken for Mauritius by several Indians, is the latest to mount its campaign for wooing Indian tourists to the exotic islands in the Indian Ocean.
Though becoming popular lately, it has still to become an important itinerary for the Indian tourists, said the Maldives Minster for Tourism, Mr Hassan Sobir.
Making a presentation at a function on the Maldives as an attractive tourist destination here, Mr Sobir said the island nation was known for its tourism and tuna. However 80 per cent of its tourism market came from European visitors.
The Minister, who had studied in Chennai in the famous Madras Christian College, said about six million Indians travel to many countries and visit the South-East Asian countries, Australia and other leading countries. But he was optimistic that the new campaign by his country would change the situation.
