Archana Chaudhary

MUMBAI, May 21

THE Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) has witnessed a steep increase in unpaid dues from its consumers, now standing at Rs 8,500 crore.

During the last financial year alone, the board was unable to recover almost Rs 1,500 crore.

" This amount has been rising for the last few years and includes interest payable on the arrears," Mr Asoke Basak, Chairman, MSEB, told Business Line. According to him , on an average, MSEB typically recovers only 90 per cent of its bills each year. Mr Basak said it has been tough for the board to recover unpaid dues mainly from farmers, power loom consumers, water supply boards (both urban and rural) and slums.
