Regulatory Bodies & Rulings Info-Tech - Telecommunications TRAI clears alternative tariff packages Our Bureau
NEW DELHI, April 10 THE Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has approved the alternative tariff packages filed by Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL) and Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTL). A TRAI statement said that the new tariffs would come into force from May 1. The operators have been directed to widely publicise their standard and alternative tariffs with a view to allow enough time to the customers to select the tariff package of their choice. The standard tariff plans were filed by several operators in conformity with the amendments to the Telecom Tariffs Order 1999. The alternative tariff plans filed by BSNL, MTNL and TTL offer a combination of competitive rentals, free calls and local call pulse rate at 180 seconds. In the case of long-distance calls, intra-circle calls tariff across all distance slabs ranges from 40 paise per minute to Rs 2.40 per minute and inter-circle calls tariff ranges between 80 paise per minute to Rs 4.80 per minute in the alternative tariff plans. The alternative tariff plans were so far offered mainly by the cellular operators. They are now being offered by the basic service operators, giving the customers a wide choice to choose a plan most suited to their requirements, TRAI said.
