Research & Development BHEL R&D mulls new facilities Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, April 10 THE corporate research and development (R&D) of the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) here has proposed a centre of excellence in coatings with an investment of Rs 40 crore. The proposal is actively being considered by the BHEL board. The corporate R&D has developed technologies, which can help coat components in hydropower generators that get eroded due to siltation. The loss from such erosion, is estimated to be around Rs 500 crore to the hydropower sector in the country. The board has already cleared the setting up of two centres of excellence in the areas of simulators for training and computational fluid dynamics (CFD), a software tool with wide applications with an investment of Rs 12 crore in its campus here, according to Mr S. Balagurunathan, Executive Director of the Corporate R&D. In a related development, a proposal has been submitted to the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) for setting up a Rs 10-crore National Industrial Coating Facility at BHEL, Haridwar, with funding from the Union Ministry of Power, he said. Presenting the annual performance, Mr Balagurunathan told newspersons that the Corporate R&D has registered a turnover of Rs 8.61 crore during 2002-03, a 37-per cent increase over the previous fiscal turnover of Rs 6.29 crore. The orders received were also up from Rs 7.5 crore last year to Rs 9 crore during fiscal 2002-03. The Virtual Reality Centre is the first of its kind in any public sector enterprise.
