HYDERABAD: The Rs 160-crore Multi-Modal Suburban Commuter System project, aimed at easing the traffic congestion in the twin cities and the suburban areas is to be commissioned by June 2003.

The project was originally scheduled for completion this month. Answering queries at a prèss conference here on Wednesday, the General Manager of South Central Railway, Mr S.M. Singla, said the infrastructure for the ambitious project was ready and most of the stations for the transport system are nearing completion. However, with certain changes suggested for the rakes, the project will need more time to be commissioned.

Consequent to the Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu's observation about the quality of rakes, the manufacturers have been asked to redesign them, which means about 2-3 rakes can be procured per month.

A delegation from the State including officials from the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad are likely to visit the coach manufacturer shortly, Mr Singla said. Following delays, the Government has proposed to further expand the scope of the project by linking Vikarabad, Zaheerabad and Mahbubnagar so as to further ease the pressure on the existing transport systems.

The transport project currently under implementation by the Indian Railways and the State Government links Secunderabad-Hyderabad-Lingampally and Falaknuma-Secunderabad by a rail network. It also connects suburbs in the twin cities.

The multi-modal system was contemplated as a 50:50 joint venture project between the Railways and the State Government. With the manufacturers directed to rework rakes, the State Government is planning to rope in a strategic partner to take up the second phase of the project. The Government is also in the process of exploring the potential to link up Lingampally with Shamshabad sectors where the proposed Greenfield international airport is set to come up.
