`Visakhapatnam, with its meandering beaches, has tremendous potential as an international tourist destination but the coastal zone regulations are coming in the way of its exploitation.'

VISAKHAPATNAM, April 8

THE Chief Minister, Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, announced here on Tuesday that the controversial GO 94 on Government appointments on contract basis would be withdrawn.

The Chief Minister, who visited the district to participate in the `Jalachaitanyam' (awareness about economic use of water) programme, told journalists at the airport that the GO had kicked up a controversy, though it was issued with a good intention, and the Congress leaders had politicised it. The Government had reconsidered the issue and decided to withdraw it. The GO, it may be noted, "was intended to facilitate appointment of State Government staff, even in the higher cadres, on a temporary (or contract) basis". He found fault with the Congress party for resorting to a "misinformation campaign" on the issue and said that after assuming power his Government had appointed as many as two lakh teachers. Due to the prevailing economic circumstances, the GO had been issued, but not to rob the youth of employment opportunities as alleged by the Congress, he clarified.

Later, he told a public meeting in the district that the scheme to divert the Godavari waters to Visakhapatnam to meet the needs of the people and the industries would certainly be taken up and the foundation stone for the project would be laid before the month-end. He said his Government was committed to taking the information technology to remote rural areas.
