New Products & Services IIIT-H develops software for blind Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, March 14 THE industry-driven International Institute of Information Technology-Hyderabad (IIIT-H) has developed an innovative reading aid for the blind. The software enables the blind or low vision people to access computers in regional languages including Hindi and Telugu, according to Prof Rajeev Sangal, Director of IIIT-H. The Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) of IIIT, Hyderabad, has developed this software with funding from Satyam Computer Services Ltd. One of the other important project which the LTRC has been working is in the area of text to speech (TTS) conversion, machine translation and knowledge management. The TTS conversion for the Indian languages is capable of converting a given text into speech. The President, Dr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, is slated to visit the IIIT-H campus on Sunday and release the software. The IIIT-Hyderabad has collaborated with the National Association for the Blind (NAB), New Delhi, in developing specialised tools and applications that aid the visually impaired people. The objective of this exercise is to provide access to Indian languages and word processing to the blind at low or no cost. The President, during his two-day visit to the State, will also launch a joint programme between IIIT-H and CARE Foundation on the latter's initiatives for the robotics surgery. As a part of this programme, the robotic surgery facility installed at the CARE Hospital will be made available to the faculty and students of the institute for research. The research initiatives include, accurate modelling of a patient's internals, effective surgery planning on a virtual patient, management of diagnostic data of multiple patients.
